Beignet: The Fancy French Pastry

During the recent trip to New Orleans, I had the privilege of tasting a beignet. In my first venture there, years ago, I may have eaten one, but I don’t recall if we had any or not.

A beignet is something like a doughtnut, only instead of being circular with a hole cut into it, the beignet is square and has powdered sugar on it.

If you’ve ever eaten funnel cake before, the taste of a beignet is quite similar. Along with the beignet, we also had coffee; the coffee accented the rich taste of the pastries and the jazzy atmosphere, making for a great treat.

Behold, the power of beignet!

The one on the left has been bitten.

Also, when fresh, these are incredibly, incredibly hot- so be careful!

Other than tasting like funnel cake and being good with coffee, the beignets are not anything special; if you’ve never had funnel cake, you’ll enjoy it. If you’ve had funnel cake, well…it’s not quite as impressive.

    Ever since The Princess and the Frog, I’ve wanted to make beignets. Guess I should get on that.

      I actually really enjoyed that movie; we watched it only a few nights ago, as a matter of fact, which kind of connected us to the experience!
